Family Beaches Within Reach: A Corfu Town Guide

25 April 2026 · 7 min read

Families staying at Oikia 4 have a small piece of geography working in their favour. The closest family beaches on Corfu — very shallow water, sandy bottom, lifeguards in summer, a taverna three steps from the sunbed — are only ten to twenty minutes' drive from the apartment door. No hour-long commutes. No picking which half of the island to live out of.

Here's the shortlist we give parents, in order of proximity, with honest notes on what each beach is actually like once you get there.

— close enough for a morning swim, home for the nap —

The Very Near Ones

All of these are under 15 minutes from the apartment by car. Each works as a morning beach you can leave after breakfast and be home for lunch.

Kontokali

6 km · 10 minutes by car

Our closest family-friendly beach. A sheltered bay with extremely shallow water — the sort where you walk twenty metres out and it still reaches an adult's knees. Mix of sand and fine pebbles, virtually no waves, several good tavernas overlooking the water. Parking is easier here than at the town's closer-in beaches because it's not an "Old Town area".

Gouvia

8 km · 12 minutes

A large protected bay next to the Gouvia marina. Sandy beach, very calm, shallow water, fully organised with sunbeds and changing rooms. Importantly for families: a proper supermarket is five minutes away for the inevitable "we forgot the sunscreen / rusk / goggles", and Aqualand water park is fifteen minutes inland for the day when the beach won't cut it.

Fifteen to Twenty Minutes

Dassia

12 km · 18 minutes

A long sand-and-fine-pebble beach in an olive-backed bay — one of the best organised beaches on the island. Proper sunbed setup, showers, changing rooms, a range of water sports for older children. If you have kids twelve and up, Dassia Ski Club does real waterskiing and wakeboarding lessons — the kind of thing that becomes "the holiday we did the…" for years afterwards.

Barbati

22 km · 30 minutes

Further up the east coast and worth the commitment for the scenery — white pebbles, exceptionally clear water, the Albanian coast across the channel. Best for children aged five and up who can handle a pebble beach in water-shoes. A family-run taverna with a children's menu at the east end. This is the "special day" east-coast beach; we send families here two or three times a week, not every day.

When It's Windy: the North

If the wind kicks up from the south and the east-coast gets choppy (rare but not unheard of), the north coast is the calm alternative. A bigger commitment — 45 minutes to an hour — but a whole different landscape and an easy day out.

Sidari & Canal d'Amour

40 km · 50 minutes

Corfu's most family-ready sandy beach, with shallow water that children walk out metres into before it gets deep. Busier and more touristy than the east-coast option, but the sand is fine, the sea slope is gentle, and the promenade of ice-cream shops and tavernas works for families. Canal d'Amour, just east along the coast, has sandstone coves to explore with older kids.

Acharavi Beach

38 km · 55 minutes

A three-kilometre stretch of sand and fine pebbles, long enough that the crowds thin out even in August. Lifeguard in high summer, sunbed rental, tavernas along the road behind. Quieter than Sidari and more of a local-ish feel. Easy parking, gentle slope, usually not crowded.

Our Tip

Morning is the family-beach hour. Leave the apartment by 9:00, be at Kontokali or Gouvia by 9:15, and you'll have the first shaded sunbeds, the calmest water, and a child who's still happy by 11. Home for an early lunch, and the afternoon is yours — Old Town wandering, a lie-down, maybe the rooftop pool.

What to Pack

Getting Around

A hire car, definitely. Buses along the east-coast road exist but run on schedules that don't align with a family morning. For the three closest family beaches (Kontokali, Gouvia, Dassia), a car takes ten minutes and parking is easy; a bus takes 40 minutes each way and you'll be carrying a beach bag plus a toddler through traffic. Not the vibe.

Hire a Car with Herbie

Herbie delivers the car to our apartment in the morning and picks it up the same way when you leave — no airport trek at either end. They stock proper family-sized cars with boot space for beach gear. Friendly local operation; fair prices.

Why Oikia 4 Works for Families

Being a town-side apartment rather than a beachside resort means the whole of the island's best beach coast is within fifteen to thirty minutes by car. You don't commit to one beach for the week — you pick the beach that matches that day's wind, weather and mood, and you get to walk home through the Liston with an ice-cream in the evening. The 79m² of space, two bedrooms and a proper kitchen handle the practical side of a family week.
