Canal d'Amour & the North

24 April 2026 · 6 min read

Forty-five minutes north of our apartment, the coastline of Corfu changes character completely. The dense olive groves of the east give way to open cliffs and long, flat sands. The water turns shallower and paler. The sandstone at Sidari has been sculpted by weather and sea into one of the island's most unusual landscapes.

The north makes a natural day-trip from a Corfu Town base. You can see all of it in one day and be back on the Liston by eight for the evening walk.

Why the North is a Day Worth Giving

Most visitors who stay in Corfu Town focus their attention east and south — the Achillion, Mon Repos, the beaches within half an hour. The north takes longer and feels far more rural. But it contains three of the island's iconic sights (Canal d'Amour, Cape Drastis, the Acharavi bays), all reachable in one looping drive, and the mountainous road that gets you there passes through villages that see far fewer tourists than the coast.

The Highlights, in Order

Canal d'Amour — Sidari

Golden sandstone worn by the sea into channels, arches and tunnels. Swim through the main channel if the mood takes you (and if the local legend about couples and singles entertains you). The coastal path has multiple viewpoints — the walk from Sidari is part of the pleasure.

Cape Drastis

Fifteen minutes west of Sidari, a limestone headland splintered into sharp fingers over a turquoise sea. Ten minutes walk down, some of the most striking coastal photography on the island. Not a swimming beach — go for the view.

Roda Harbour

The north-coast fishing village where lunch works best. Small traditional harbour, tavernas serving the morning catch, an unhurried sense that the rest of the coast is quite far away. Try the grilled octopus at whichever harbour-side taverna looks busiest.

Acharavi Beach

Two kilometres of flat fine sand. Shallow water for a long way out — the one beach on the island where people push into the water for ten minutes before they can actually swim. Lovely for a late-afternoon stroll along the tideline.

Agios Spiridon (North)

The secret of the lot. A small fine-sand bay beyond Kassiopi, often deserted even in August. Turquoise water, two simple tavernas. If you want to end the day in peace, head here.

A suggested itinerary

Leave the apartment at 9am. Cape Drastis by 10:30 for soft light. Canal d'Amour swim and photography 11:30–12:45. Lunch at Roda harbour 1:00–2:30. Acharavi or Agios Spiridon for a long swim 3:00–5:30. Back in Corfu Town by 7pm, in time to change for dinner.

The Drive Itself

The coastal road from Corfu Town north runs close to the shore as far as Kassiopi, then turns inland through Roda and Acharavi to Sidari. The stretch through Perithia and the Pantokrator foothills is one of the prettiest inland drives on the island — worth taking the slower inland route on the way back for a change of view.

Getting around

Herbie Cars

Our recommended local rental partner. They deliver the car directly to the apartment door. Public transport reaches the north-coast villages but stops short of Cape Drastis and the smaller bays.

Extending the Stay North

If after the day trip you decide you want more time on this coast, our neighbours at Corfu Beach and Town keep properties spread across the island — including some that put you closer to Kassiopi and the north.

A partner stay

Corfu Beach and Town

Beach houses across the island with a few options on the north-east and east side — good for a second base if the Corfu Town apartment has satisfied your culture quota.

A Few Practical Notes

Footwear. Aqua shoes for Canal d'Amour, proper trainers for the Cape Drastis descent.

Timing. Canal d'Amour is quietest before 10am and after 5pm. The midday hours are busy with tour buses.

Parking. Sidari has paid public lots near the viewpoints. Cape Drastis is informal roadside gravel.

Fuel. Fill the tank in Corfu Town before leaving — the coastal stations are sparser.
