Staying in Corfu Old Town makes cycling unusually easy — the classic Northeast Coast Road starts a few hundred metres from the apartment, and rental shops will deliver a bike (regular or electric) directly to the pedestrian zone. Here are five routes you can start from the apartment door, ordered from easy to challenging.
Why Cycle From Town
Two practical reasons. First: you avoid the morning car-to-trailhead drive that most cycling on Corfu requires. Second: rental shops in town deliver. Park your wheels downstairs for the week, wake up, eat breakfast on the balcony, cycle straight out of the Old Town and onto the coast road.
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the best seasons. Summer rides need to start by 8 AM, before the heat and the hire-car traffic build.
1. Northeast Coast Road Moderate
40 km one-way · 4–5 hours · 400 m elevation
The standout ride from Corfu Town. Head north from the apartment along the coast road to Kassiopi, through Dassia, Ipsos, Barbati, Nissaki, Kalami (coffee at Durrell’s White House), Agni. The Ionian is a constant companion to your right; the Albanian mountains are the horizon.
Swim stops every 5–10 km if you want them. Lunch in Kassiopi. Return by bus (most routes take bikes) or retrace. On an e-bike it’s easy; on a regular bike it’s a proper day.
2. Southern Flat Loop Easy
35 km · 3–4 hours · flat
Drive south with the bikes to Lefkimmi (or ride from town if you’re an ambitious one-day adventure type), then loop through the flat agricultural south: Korission Lagoon (Natura 2000, flamingos in spring), Halikounas Beach (swim stop), Argyrades and Perivoli (traditional villages for lunch). Almost no traffic. The flattest cycling day Corfu offers.
3. Skripero Village Circuit Moderate
25 km loop · 2.5–3.5 hours · 350 m
Take the bike in the boot to Skripero (20 minutes’ drive from town) and ride the central-interior villages: Sokraki with its Albania view, Zygos, Stavros. Best combined with a lunch stop in Sokraki — the village square is unchanged in 60 years.
4. Paleokastritsa Loop Moderate–Hard
30 km loop · 3–4 hours · 500 m
Drive to Giannades or Skripero, then descend through olive groves to Paleokastritsa for a swim, climb back up through Lakones (Bella Vista viewpoint) and Makrades (olive wood village). A highlight day; e-bike recommended unless you like pain.
5. Mount Pantokrator Challenge Challenging
30 km return from Spartilas · 4–6 hours · 800 m climb
The ultimate Corfu cycling day. Drive to Spartilas, climb 15 km at 5–6 percent (sections of 10 percent) to the 906 m summit, descend carefully. Monastery at the top is usually open. Only for experienced climbers on a regular bike — on an e-bike, open to most fit riders.
E-Bikes: Rent Them
Unless you’re a committed road cyclist, rent an e-bike. Range of 60–80 km per charge, 25–40 euros per day, widely available in Corfu Town. Pantokrator becomes do-able, Paleokastritsa becomes a pleasure instead of a grind, and you finish rides with energy to eat a proper Corfiot dinner. Several operators deliver to the apartment; book ahead in July–August.
Apartment-Based Cycling Tips
Storage: Bikes fit in the apartment stairwell. Rental shops will deliver and collect.
Start direction: North out of the Old Town avoids the morning traffic around the new port.
Safety: Corfu drivers are generally patient with cyclists, but the road out of town (the first 3 km north) is narrow and busy. Ride single file until you’re past Kontokali.
Water: 2 litres minimum in summer. Fill up at the Dassia or Ipsos supermarkets on long rides.
Navigation: Komoot has most Corfu routes user-uploaded. Download offline.
After the ride: The apartment’s five-minute walk to the old market means post-ride lunch options are endless. See our local cuisine guide.
